MHECare was established in response to requests from key higher education and legislative leaders who sought a collaborative region-wide approach to supporting student health and wellness. Since 2013, MHEC has offered institutions access to fully insured school-sponsored plans, and In 2021, MHEC expanded its offerings to offer solutions in the area of virtual mental health.
Campuses can leverage MHECare solutions with peace of mind knowing that MHEC has performed its due diligence through a comprehensive and extensive RFP process. Colleges and universities can use MHECare’s student health contracts, eliminating the need to conduct their own RFP process, and can customize the MHEC contract to meet the specific circumstances of the institution. MHEC also provides guidance and support to school administrators in reviewing and managing their student health insurance needs.
MHEC convenes leaders in student health benefits throughout the Midwest and beyond in its Student Health Benefits Advisory Committee (SHBAC). The committee is charged with exploring regional initiatives to improve higher education productivity for colleges and universities that face increasing demands for student health care.
The program is also available to postsecondary institutions of MHEC's sister compact regions in the New England Board of Higher Education, the Southern Regional Education Board, and the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.
Having adequate student health support on campus is critical to student success and retention. MHEC offers institutions access to providers that can serve students’ physical and mental health needs given institutional staffing and geographic constraints.
