Dual enrollment allows high school students to take college courses and receive college credit.
MHEC provides research, publications, collaborative groups, convenings, and initiatives that support the growth of all aspects of dual enrollment programming, including teacher certification.
All 50 states have some sort of dual enrollment programming, with some of the oldest and most comprehensive programs located in the MHEC region. Dual enrollment students are more likely than their peers to enroll in and complete college, at a higher level of performance and in less time.
Concurrent enrollment — one model of dual enrollment — involves a specially qualified high school teacher working with a faculty member at a postsecondary institution to teach a college course in a high school setting. Concurrent enrollment is a high-impact practice, especially for students who are the first in their families to attend college. To bolster the number of high school teachers who hold the credentials necessary to teach such courses, MHEC staff are leading and participating in research and policy initiatives to address the shortage of concurrent enrollment teachers.
MHEC publishes a quarterly update on dual enrollment.
