The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a vital tool that helps students and families access financial assistance for higher education.

FAFSA unlocks access to federal and state grants, work-study programs, and federal loans, making college and career training more affordable. FAFSA completion is an early step on the path to postsecondary education. Completion of the FAFSA helps bridge the gap between the rising costs of tuition and a student’s financial resources, ensuring that higher education remains within reach for more students.

MHEC helps its member states improve access to student financial aid through initiatives that promote the completion of the FAFSA. MHEC collaborates with institutions, state agencies, and regional partners to develop and improve sustainable systems to enhance FAFSA completion support. MHEC’s work includes:

  • Capacity Building: MHEC assists states and institutions in building their capacity to promote FAFSA completion by providing resources and sharing promising practices that support educators, counselors, and policymakers in boosting FAFSA awareness and access.
  • Data-Driven Research: MHEC conducts and disseminates research on FAFSA completion strategies and barriers to FAFSA submission. This research helps stakeholders understand trends and implement evidence-based solutions.
  • Collaboration with Regional and National Partners: MHEC works alongside state agencies and other state and national higher education associations and nonprofits to coordinate FAFSA outreach efforts. Through partnerships, MHEC shares best practices, scales successful programs, and leverages resources to amplify impact.
  • Events and Webinars: MHEC hosts workshops, webinars, and community conversations to bring stakeholders together and explore innovative strategies for improving FAFSA completion rates.
