Having adequate health support on campus is vital for student success and retention.
MHEC’s student health insurance contracts were established in response to requests from key higher education and legislative leaders who sought a collaborative region-wide approach to supporting student health and wellness. Since 2013, MHEC has offered institutions contacts for fully insured school-sponsored plans.
Campuses can leverage MHEC’s contract with peace of mind knowing that MHEC has performed its due diligence through a comprehensive and extensive RFP process. Guided by student health leaders across the Midwest who serve on its Student Health Benefits Advisory Committee, MHEC has selected UnitedHealthCare – Student Resources for its contract for student health insurance.
By contracting with UnitedHealthCare StudentResources through MHEC’s agreement, higher education institutions can save time and money, including:
- eliminating the need to RFP. Since MHEC is an instrumentality of state government, MHEC’s contracts meet the procurement guidelines of its 12 member states as well as the states served by its sister higher education compact.
- providing a template contract with stringent performance guarantees. Institutions can customize the MHEC contract to meet the specific circumstances of their institution.
- as the program grows, renewing institutions have the opportunity to access more favorable target loss ratios.
UHCSR offers injury and sickness plans for domestic and international students as well as emergency medical travel services, vision and dental plans and insurance for risk groups, like study abroad and special summer programs.
Institutions who work with brokers and who contract directly with UHC-SR are eligible to use MHEC’s contract. MHEC also provides guidance and support to school administrators in managing their student health insurance needs.
